Calvary vs. Ocean View 4/19/12

                                               Calvary Blocks Ocean View

In their first Citrus League West contest, the Calvary Christian Lions began the defense of their league championship title by defeating the Ocean View Christian Patriots 12-0.

The win is the 15th straight league victory for Calvary stretching back to the 2010 season.

The Lions were able to play all 20 of their players and all contributed to the win. They pounded out 17 hits and played a solid defensive game overall. Once again the Lion pitching staff threw exceptionally well as 4 pitchers combined for the shutout allowing only 2 hits, 2 walks while striking out 13. The staff lowered their team ERA to an amazing 1.42.

Senior Isaac Conover got the start and threw 3 solid innings. After a shaky first inning where Ocean View managed their only 2 hits, he settled in and finished strong by striking out the last 3 batters he faced. Connor Kollenda, in his first pitching outing of the year, threw 2 hitless innings of relief, striking out 4 and picking up his first career victory. Brock Bentley had another strong performance throwing a perfect 6th inning with one strikeout and sophomore lefthander David Carpenter finished it off by striking out the side in the last inning.

Offensively, 13 different Lion hitters had base hits. They were led by Carpenter, Matt Hartman, Alex Nurding and Caleb Whitley who had two hits each. Hartman and Whitley, along with Sam Hebert had RBI doubles.

The win puts Calvary at 1-0 in league play and 14-4 overall. They take on Guajome in their second league contest on Friday 4/20 at the Vista Sports Park at 3:00.
