Calvary @ Poway High School 3/29/12

Lions Painfully Lose In (and Under) The Lights

Any way you add this up, the Poway Titan's 7th inning comeback to beat the
Calvary Lions was tough to take.

Going into Poway's final at bat, Calvary entered the inning with a slim 2-1
lead. With two outs and a runner on first, the 9th hitter in the lineup
lifted a lazy pop-up to shallow left field for the apparent final out of the
game. Unfortunately, playing their first night game of the year, the left
fielder never saw the the ball and it dropped for a run scoring double that
tied the game at 2. The hitter ended up scoring from second with the
eventual winning run.

The loss couldn't have been any harder on anyone than it was for starting
pitcher Russell Harmening who was charged with 2 earned runs that inning and
suffered his first loss of the season. However following the game, Harmening
put it all into perspective by telling his teammates that we should be proud
of the way we played and showed that we can play among the best competition,
but most of all, we clearly showed to everyone that we play for the "glory
of God". This is a testament of true character and one reason why Russell
was named co-captain of the team and was awarded a full scholarship to
Westmont College.

Poway coach Bob Parry said, "that along with Cathedral Catholic, you are
easily the best team we have faced all year. You clearly were the better
team today." Very high praise from the coach who leads what is traditionally
one of the best baseball programs in the entire nation.

Harmening was fantastic on the day shutting out the mighty Titan offense for
5 innings before finally surrendering a two out run in the 6th inning. He
walked no one and struck out 9. He also hit his first home run of the year,
a solo blast deep into the trees beyond the left field wall.

The game was scoreless through the first 3 innings although Calvary had
baserunners on and threatened in each frame. They finally broke loose and
scored two in the bottom of the 4th to take the lead. After Harmening's
leadoff homerun, sophomore Matt Hartman lofted a soft popup to center that
dropped for a bloop single. He advanced to third when senior co-captain Sam
Hebert lined a single to the left field gap and scored when sophomore DH
Gordon Nixon lined a deep sacrifice fly to center. Calvary nursed the 2 run
lead until the dreaded 7th inning.

With the lead and facing the bottom of the order, Harmening coerced the lead
hitter to ground back to the box where Harmening took control and ran the
ball to first for the putout. The second hitter bounced a ball up the middle
but second baseman Aaron Frazee had to eat the ball because there was no
play at first and the potential tying run reached on the infield hit.
Harmening struck out the next hitter for the second out and the stage was
set. With a 1-1 count the popup was hit and lost in the lights. There was
still time to throw the runner out but the throw from shallow left was up
the first base line and took two bounces to reach catcher Caleb Whitley who
made a valiant effort diving to make the tag but it was too late and the
runner scored by inches.

Seizing the momentum Titan leadoff hitter Devin Dooney, after three previous
strikeouts in his prior at bats, laced a line single to left on the next
pitch and once again the throw was wide and late and Poway took the lead.
The inning had a fitting end when the last out was made on a fly ball to
left that was nearly identical to the one that dropped.

The tough loss puts Calvary's record at 7-4 overall. They finished 3-2 in
the North County Tournament. They start their final tournament, the 61st
Annual Lion's Tournament, next week with games against The Rock Academy
(Monday at La Jolla Country Day), Del Sol from Las Vegas, NV (Tuesday at
Kearny High School)and Valley Center (Wednesday at Alliant University). All
games have 3:00 start times with the championship game(s) being held on
Thursday.

Calvary @ Mount Carmel High School 3/24/12

 Calvary Conquers in Controversial Contest
Many of you were wondering why I had not yet sent a recap of Saturday's game versus the Mt. Carmel Sundevils despite the fact that we walked off the field that day with a nice 3-1 win.

Well, the game was officially protested by Mt. Carmel because the 3rd run we scored was aided by the umpires who were found to have misinterpreted the rules (I will provide the details below). The good news is that I received word today from Mt. Carmel coach Chachi Mueller that he is withdrawing their protest and the game is now final. Calvary is now officially 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the North County Tournament.

The game felt as if Calvary had dominated the entire game but had nothing to show for it. They started quickly by putting up a run in their first at bat when Sophomore David Carpenter showcased his speed by beating out an infield hit and promptly stole second. He scored when Calvary RBI leader Russell Harmening hit a soft single to left giving the Lions a quick 1-0 lead.

They added another run in the second inning when senior Isaac Conover drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. He scored when Brock Bentley launched a ball deep over the rightfielder's head for a run-scoring double.

Sam Sheehan, in his first start of the year, kept the Sundevils at bay and picked up his second win throwing 4 solid innings allowing only 1 hit, walking 3 and striking out 6. The Sundevils scored their lone run in the 3rd inning when a lead-off walk eventually scored on a sacrifice fly.

The game remained at 2-1 with Calvary nursing the slim lead going into the 5th inning. That's when it got interesting. With one out, Carpenter drew a four-pitch walk. Caleb Whitley followed, and with a 2-0 count and Carpenter stealing second, he was hit by a pitch and the home plate umpire awarded him first base, moving Carpenter to second. After a few moments, play resumed and the Mt. Carmel catcher appealed to the base umpire who judged that Whitley swung at the pitch turning the hit by pitch into a strike. Whitley, who was hit on the forearm near the elbow, clearly never began the swing and photographs and video of the alleged swing proved the umpire made the wrong call. But it is a judgment call and it is irreversible. The controversy arose when the umpires elected to keep Carpenter at second base. Because it was declared to be a swing, but could not be a foul ball because it hit Whitley 18 inches from the bat, they allowed Carpenter to remain at second with a stolen base. However, the rule book clearly states that if a batter is hit by a pitch, whether a ball or strike, the ball is dead. A runner cannot advance in that situation and Carpenter should have remained at first base. At that point Mt. Carmel protested to the plate umpire who is required to announce to the opposing coaches and official scorer that the game, from this point on, was being played under protest. The announcement was never made. It was later discovered that the home plate umpire never even told his partner the game was being played under protest.

When play resumed, Whitley grounded out to first and Carpenter advanced to third on the out. A wild pitch then scored Carpenter extending Calvary's lead to 3-1 where it remained for the duration of the game.

The Sundevils mounted a threat in the bottom of the 6th inning when Carpenter, who had relieved Sheehan, hit the lead-off hitter with a pitch. A double down the left field line put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs and Calvary's slim lead was in jeopardy......

Paging Russell Harmening.....paging Russell Harmening....

Once again Russell Harmening saved the day. Knowing that he needed strikeouts to get his team out of the situation, he stepped up and blew away the next 3 Sundevil hitters, fanning all three while throwing only 10 pitches.

He finished off the game throwing a perfect 7th inning and securing the win for the Lions - picking up his second save of the season.

The Lions, who defeated El Camino on Tuesday in an extra-inning 4-2 win, now face the tough Poway Titans in a rare night game under the lights at Poway High School. Game time is 6:00 pm. Come join us if you can. I hear they have a great snack bar so come out, have dinner and watch a ball game!

No Calvary team has ever played a school as prestigious as Poway so it should be a fun challenge.

Calvary @ El Camino High School 3/27/12

More Late Inning Heroics Lift Lions Over Wildcats
It took 8 innings but Calvary Christian finished strong and pulled off a tight extra inning win against El Camino defeating the Wildcats 4-2.

Sophomore starting pitcher David Carpenter had his finest start of the year throwing 5 2/3 innings, scattering 5 hits, striking out 7 and only walking 1. He allowed 2 runs but only one was earned. He pitched well enough to earn the win but ended up with a no-decision.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Calvary's nemesis, poor defense, once again reared its head. With two outs and runners on 1st & 2nd, a routine ground-ball was hit to third but the throw to first was well off-target and the runner scored from second on the throwing error giving El Camino a 1-0 lead.

Showing great character, Calvary reversed their mistake and put up two runs in the 4th to take over the lead. It started when Carpenter lofted a pop-up to right that fell between 3 players and he hustled into second with a lead-off double. Junior Caleb Whitley followed with a line single to center putting runners on 1st and 3rd. Sam Sheehan then hit a bouncer to short and El Camino attempted a double play. They got the lead runner Whitley at second but Sheehan beat the throw to first. Carpenter scored from third on the play knotting the score at 1 apiece. Sheehan advanced a to second on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run when Russell Harmening banged an RBI single up the middle.

El Camino came back and tied it when they loaded the bases in the bottom of the 4th and the runner on third scored on a wild pitch.

The game remained tied at 2 through regulation. In the bottom of the 6th, Carpenter ran into a jam when a two out single and an error by the third baseman put runners on second and third. Sophomore Matt Hartman relieved Carpenter and after walking the first hitter to load the bases, came up big and got El Camino's hottest hitter to chase a high fastball for a clutch strikeout preserving the tie.

Calvary threatened but failed to score in the 7th stranding the go-ahead run at third. In the bottom of the inning, Hartman got two quick outs but a single and a hit by pitch put the winning run into scoring position. Senior Harmening came in relief and pitched Calvary out of trouble getting the first hitter to pop out in foul territory.

Calvary busted the game open in the top of the 8th when pinch-hitter Gordon Nixon drew a clutch walk to lead-off the inning. Speedy Aaron Frazee came in to run for Nixon as the potential go-ahead run. Carpenter then grounded a seeing-eye single between the first and second basemen putting two on with no outs and the heart of the Lion's batting order due up. A wild pitch advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd and Wildcat coach Joe Gonzalez elected to intentionally walk Whitley to load the bases. Senior Sheehan made them pay for that decision and rose to the occasion by lining a double just inside the right-field foul line scoring Frazee and Carpenter and giving Calvary a 4-2 lead.

Then Russell Harmening did what Russell Harmening does and that is to win ball games. He threw a perfect bottom of the 8th, striking out two on only 8 pitches. The win makes him 3-0 on the year.

Calvary is now 7-3 on the year and 3-1 in the North County Tournament. However, last week's 3-1 win over Mt. Carmel was protested and the final decision has not yet been made. The head of the umpire's association is reviewing and will make the final judgment.

Calvary takes on it's toughest opponent to date, the mighty Poway Titans on Thursday. It is night game with a start time of 6:00. Come and check it out if you can.

Calvary @ Escondido High School 3/22/12

Generosity and Baseball Do Not Mix
Christmas is still 8 months away but the Calvary Lions gave an early gift to the Escondido Cougars by committing 5 errors and allowing 6 unearned runs losing 7-1 in the second game of the North County Tournament.

Going into the season it was clearly evident that defense was Calvary's biggest weakness and it came to light this game. A team can normally survive a game if they spread out one or two errors throughout the course of a game, but when multiple errors and defensive mental lapses are combined into one inning, a team cannot compete.

Calvary started the game on a positive note by scoring in the top of the first inning when Sam Sheehan doubled over the rightfieder's head and Russell Harmening singled him in giving Calvary a quick 1-0 lead.

The bottom of the first started in a promising manner when Escondido's leadoff hitter flew out to center, but by the end of the inning the tone of the game was set and Calvary dug themselves a hole too deep to climb out of.

The second batter hit a roller to short that was misplayed and he reached on the one out error. Slightly shaken by the miscue, starting pitcher Isaac Conover briefly lost composure and walked the next hitter on 5 pitches putting runners on 1st and 2nd. The Cougar cleanup hitter followed by lifting a high fly ball to right that was dropped by the outfielder to load the bases. Had Calvary made the two plays they would have been back in the dugout with a 1-0 leading looking to add more. But that was not the case.

Escondido is a good team and good teams will make you pay for your mistakes and that was exactly what happened. As after the first error, the following hitter walked, this time forcing in a run tying the game at 1-1. Payback came when the Cougars got their sole hit of the inning when Walker Josey lined a double into the rightfield corner scoring two more runs making it 3-1. They scored another when a wild pitch allowed the runner on third to score. He would have been easily out but the pitcher failed to cover home on the play. When the dust cleared Escondido plated 4 unearned runs.

Calvary threatened several times but Escondido managed to do what Calvary could not - play good defense. They turned two double plays, one with the bases loaded, to eliminate the Lion's run scoring attempts.

Escondido scored two more ugly runs in the bottom of the 3rd. The first hitter walked on 4 straight pitches prompting a pitching change. Conover was replaced by senior righthander Brock Bentley. Bentley got the next hitter to fly to right for the first out but let one get away to the next hitter and he hit him to put runners on 1st and 2nd. The following hitter grounded a ball in the hole to short and Russell Harmening made the only play he had by tossing the ball to third for an easy force out but the thirdbaseman failed to cover the bag. Rather than 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, the mental lapse loaded the bases with only one out. Bentley pitched out of the jam by getting the next hitter to hit a one-boucer to third who threw the lead runner out at the plate. In an effort to complete the double play, the catcher rushed his throw to first despite the fact the runner was less than half way down the first base line and threw low to first base. The ball was unable to be picked and glanced away far enough to allow the runner to score all the way from second on the throwing error.

Escondido scored their only non-gift run in the bottom of the sixth when they hit back-to-back doubles.

Bentley was very effective in relief throwing 4 innings and allowing only 1 earned run, walking 1 and striking out 3. He threw only 57 pitches.

Senior first baseman Sam Hebert, who has played a gold-glove level first base this season, bailed out his teammates by scooping several errant throws. He kept the game for getting even worse than it was.

Sheehan was the big hitter of the day going 3-3.

Calvary drops to 1-1 in the North County Tournament which will most likely eliminate them from contention. The loss puts their overall record at 5-3. Next they take on Mt. Carmel on Saturday at 10:30.

Calvary @ San Dieguito High School 3/20/12

                                           12 Innings later....Lions 2, Mustangs 1

The Calvary Lions battled for 12 grueling innings and outlasted the San Dieguito Mustangs by pulling off a 2-1 victory in the opening game of the North County Tournament.

Calvary used 4 pitchers who limited the Mustangs to only 3 hits and allowed no earned runs. San Dieguito also threw 4 pitchers with similar results - 4 hits allowed and 1 earned run.

Sophomore lefty David Carpenter started for the Lions and tossed 5 shutout innings allowing only one 1st inning single. He walked 4 and struck out 3 in a splendid performance before exiting the game with a tight 1-0 lead.

Calvary scored their run in the second inning when Matt Hartman drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a single by Sam Hebert and scored on a close play at the plate when Isaac Conover laced a line shot RBI single to left.

Senior Sam Sheehan relieved Carpenter and threw a scoreless 6th inning holding Calvary's lead at 1-0. With the 8th, 9th and 1st hitters, who were a combined 0-12 on the day, scheduled to hit in the bottom of the 7th inning, the win looked promising for Calvary.

But the Lions let down their guard and allowed them to tie the game without the benefit of a hit. Sheehan started the inning by walking the leadoff hitter on 4 straight pitches. Trying to move him into scoring position, the runner attempted to steal second and was clearly thrown out but the ball dropped out of the fielder's glove for an error putting the tying run at second. The 9th hitter followed by drawing the second consecutive walk of the inning putting runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs.

Senior Russell Harmening relieved Sheehan and on the first pitch he threw, the Mustang batter laid down a sacrifice bunt putting the tying and winning runs in scoring position with one out.

The Mustangs then tied the game when they hit a fly ball to rightfield that was gloved by Carpenter who threw a laser to the plate but the throw was 10 feet up the line and resulted in a collision and catcher Caleb Whitley was unable to hang onto the ball at impact.

With the score knotted at 1-1, Harmening hit the next batter putting runners at 1st and 2nd but he pitched himself out of the jam by reaching back and blowing 3 fastballs past the cleanup hitter for the inning-ended strikeout.

Neither team was able to score over the next 4 innings. Harmening settled in and threw 4 shoutout innings only allowing 1 hit, walking none and striking out 6. He only threw 51 pitches in a very efficient outing.

Sophomore Hartman relieved Harmening and was nearly flawless himself throwing 2 shutout innings allowing 1 hit, no walks and striking out 1.

Calvary finally broke the deadlock in the top of the 12th inning when Hartman hit a one-out liner to the shortstop who was unable to make a backhand catch allowing him to reach on an infield hit. Hebert was then hit by a pitch putting the go-ahead run at second. Junior Alex Nurding then bunted a 1-0 pitch back to the box. The Mustang pitcher, in an attempt to get the lead runner at third, threw wide and the throw glanced off the third-baseman's glove into left allowing Hartman to score the eventual winning run.

Hartman shut them down in the bottom of the 12th picking up the win in relief. He also scored both Calvary runs. Appropriately the game ended when the final hitter hit a high popup that was gloved by Hartman for the last out of the game.

The win lifts Calvary's record to 5-2 and 1-0 in the North County Tournament. They face Escondido on Thursday and Mt. Carmel on Saturday.

Calvary @ Canyon Crest 3/13/12

                                             Harmening Shoots Down the Ravens
Following Calvary's worse loss of the year, senior righthanded pitcher Russell Harmening defined his role as the team's stopper by shutting down the Canyon Crest Ravens 6-1 in the final contest of the 31st Annual Pirate-Falcon Tournament.

Harmening scattered 4 hits, walked none and struckout 10 Raven hitters in 6 innings of work. He allowed 1 unearned run when a wind-blown fly ball to right was misjudged and fell for a triple. The runner came all the way around to score when an errant throw missed the cutoff man.

Offensively, Calvary hit the ball consistently hard, banging out 13 hits against 4 Canyon Crest pitchers.

They started out quickly by scoring 4 runs in the top of the first giving Harmening a nice cushion to work with. Caleb Whitley got the ball rolling when he grounded a ball in the 5.5 hole that was misplayed and he reached on the error. Sam Sheehan followed with a deep double into the right-center gap putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. Harmening then shot a single up the middle scoring both runners. Sophomore Matt Hartman crushed a full-count pitch into the left-center gap for a double once again putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. Sam Hebert then fought off a two-strike pitch a lined a solid RBI single to right scoring Harmening. An RBI groundout by Alex Nurding ended the scoring.

Calvary played solid defense throughout the game as Harmening held Calvary's lead.

The Lions added another run in the 4th inning when Brock Bentley singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a David Carpenter infield single and scored on a Whitley RBI groundout. They scored their final run when Whitley smashed a long double down the left field line and Sheehan knocked him in with his second double of the day.

Sheehan closed the game in the 7th by pitching a scoreless inning and striking out two.

The win lifts Calvary's overall record to 4-2. They finished the Pirate-Falcon Tournament at a respectable 3-2 but fell short of advancing to the finals. The tournament invite was a first in Calvary history and overall they rose to the occasion of playing some of the toughest competition in the area.

Next week, they raise the bar higher taking on a much more difficult task in the North County Tournament. They are scheduled to play 5 games over the next 3 weeks versus San Dieguito, Escondido, Mt. Carmel, El Camino and Poway.

Calvary @ Fallbrook 3/10/12

Single to right in the second inning.
                   Warriors Scalp the Lions
Sometimes it's just not in the cards. That was the case on Saturday as the Fallbrook Warriors handily defeated the Calvary Lions 9-0 in a game where it seemed nothing went right for the Lions.

The top of the first inning proved ominous when junior Caleb Whitley lined an apparent one-out base hit down the left field line. The diving outfielder fielded the ball on a hop but gave a splendid acting performance by pretending to catch the ball and the umpires thought it was believable and thumbed Whitley out. Sam Sheehan followed when after reaching base on an error, stole second base. The catcher's throw was far off-line and the secondbaseman lunged at Sheehan and missed the tag by 2-3 feet yet the base umpire was suckered in by the fake tag and called him out as well. Right away Calvary knew they had the task of not only beating a tough Fallbrook team, but overcoming misfortune as well. In all, the umpires awarded two academy awards to the Fallbrook defense for their first inning acting performance.

But this is baseball and an umpire's calls should have no impact on how you approach a game. Good teams put it behind them and overcome and bad teams let it effect them. This was a day where a good team let it get the best of them - and they paid the price.

The momentum gained by Fallbrook in the first inning had to be quickly turned around by Calvary to get the game back in order, but the Lions did not answer the call. Starting pitcher Isaac Conover, coming off a solid pitching performance versus Santa Fe Christian in his last outing, struggled with his control early and walked the leadoff hitter to keep Fallbrook's momentum flowing. The second hitter laid down a sacrifice bunt that became an infield hit when Conover slipped on the freshly mowed infield grass in an attempt to field the ball. Following a hard lineout to right, the cleanup hitter topped a bouncer in the hole to short, the ball was bobbled by the shortstop but he would have had no play at any base so it went for an infield single to load the bases. The next hitter drew a walk to force in Fallbrook's first run. On the next pitch, the following batter pounded a ball straight down onto home plate and it shot high in the air and all second baseman Kallin Iwasaki could do was wait for it to come down as the runners all advanced a base for the Warrior's 3rd infield hit of the inning giving them an early 2-0 lead. Another bases loaded walk forced in a third run. Luckily, Calvary dodged further damage when the 8th hitter grounded into a nifty 4-6-3 double play to bail the Lion's out of the early jam.

The Lion's posed their biggest threat to score in their half of the second when Russell Harmening and Matt Hartman started the inning with back-to-back singles but the potential comeback was erased when a groundout and two strikeouts ended the rally.

Fallbrook added their 4th run in the third when they hit a one-out double down the left field line and the runner advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later he scored on another infield hit.

Sophomore lefty David Carpenter relieved Conover in the top of the 4th inning but the wheels came off the bus when two infield errors, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, 3 wild pitches and a timely double helped Fallbrook score 3 unearned runs increasing their lead to 7-0.

In the 5th Carpenter did not help his own cause by walking the leadoff hitter on 4 straight pitches, and as the they do 70% of the time, he scored.

The Warriors added their 9th and final run when they turned their 5th infield hit of the day into a run off senior righthander Brock Bentley.

Offensively, Calvary was lead by Hartman who singled twice. Whitley, Harmening, Sam Hebert and Alex Nurding also chipped in hits.

Overall, Calvary hit the ball harder and better than their opponent but Fallbrook pitcher Matt Jepsen pitched tough when it counted and shutout Calvary for the first time in two years. He did not walk a batter and effectively changed speeds and rose to the occasion and threw his best pitches with runners in scoring position.

In comparison, Calvary pitchers walked 7 and hit 3 batters. They also threw 6 wild pitches and consistently missed their spots and were off target all day. They did a great job by allowing only 3 non-infield hits, but when a pitching staff allows 10 runners to reach by walk or hit by pitch, they have created for themselves a situation where the chances are extremely high that they will not be successful.

Obviously, work needs to be done to get back on track because the March schedule will grow more challenging.

Calvary faces a tough Canyon Crest team on Tuesday in the final contest of the Pirate/Falcon Classic. They begin play the following week in the North County Tournament.

The loss puts Calvary's record at 3-2.

Calvary @ San Diego High School

                           Calvary Clubs Cavers *
The Calvary Lions, still fired up from their last inning, come-from-behind
victory two days earlier kept up the momentum and decisively put away the
San Diego High School Cavers 11-0.

The win lifts Calvary's record to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the 31st Annual
Pirate/Falcon Classic keeping them in contention for the championship.

The Lion's used 4 pitchers in the combined shutout allowing only 3 hits and
striking out 9 Caver batters.

Senior ace Russell Harmening started the game and worked 3 nearly flawless
innings allowing only a bloop single in the first inning. He struck out 6
and walked none. Brock Bentley, Matt Hartman and Alex Nurding shared the
next 4 innings and kept the shutout and the win intact.

Calvary pounded out 10 hits led by two each from Caleb Whitley, Sam Sheehan
and Alex Nurding.

The Lions threatened to score in the first inning but stranded two runners.
They were able to get the runners across in the second when they broke the
game open scoring 4 runs. A leadoff walk to senior Isaac Conover started the
rally and Nurding followed with a hard line-single to left. Bentley then hit
a shallow popup to center that was lost in the sun and fell for a hit
loading the bases. Freshman Kallin Iwasaki, in his first high school start,
drew a walk to force in a run and picked up his first career RBI. The second
run scored on a hard-hit RBI groundout by sophomore Davey Carpenter. A
throwing error by the Caver shortstop plated Calvary's third run and Whitley
followed by stepping up and banging a line shot to left for his second hit
of the day driving in the the fourth run of the inning.

Calvary threatened but was held scoreless in the 3rd and 4th innings but
managed to increase their lead to 7-0 by scoring 3 more in the fifth.
Sheehan got the inning going by belting a deep double over the
centerfielder's head landing just out of his reach. Harmening lined a solid
single to left easily scoring Sheehan. Gordon Nixon reached when he bounced
a ball to third that was misplayed by the fielder and Conover drew his
second walk of the day to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Harmening from
third and Nurding grounded out scoring another.

They added one in the 6th when Whitley drew a one-out walk and advanced to
third on Sheehan's second double of the day, a towering fly ball to
right-center. A wild pitch scored Whitley giving Calvary an 8-0 lead.

They capped off the game scoring 3 more in the top of the 7th when Nurding
lead off with a walk and was replaced with pinch runner Chase Kollenda. Sam
Athas then lined a solid single up the middle for hit and freshman Anthony
Martin worked a great at bat and earned a walk to once again load the bases
for Calvary. Freshman Andrew Leakey, pinch hitting for Whitley, drew an RBI
walk as did Sheehan who walked to force in another. The scoring ended when
Martin scored on a Harmening RBI groundout.

Overall it was well-played performance and every player on the time
contributed to the victory.

The Lion's next challenge is against Fallbrook High School where they will
be taking on a tough Warrior team at 2:30 on Saturday.

Calvary @ El Camino 3/6/12

No movie script could have better captured the valiant comeback of the Calvary Lions as they scored 4 runs with two outs in the last inning to defeat the El Camino Wildcats 6-5.

Down 5-2 with one out in the top of the last inning, Sam Hebert started the rally by bombing a double high off the left field wall. A pop out to the pitcher for the second out put the Wildcats one out away from victory but leadoff hitter David Carpenter kept Calvary's hopes alive when he singled up the middle putting the tying run at the plate in junior Caleb Whitley. Whitley had already hit 4 foul home runs in his previous at bats and was looking to straighten one out. He did, launching a 1-0 fastball high over the left field wall to tie the game at 5-5.

Taking the momentum and running with it, Sam Sheehan kept things going by lining a shot to left for a solid base hit. With Russell Harmening at the plate, Sheehan stole second putting the go-ahead run in scoring position. Harmening took advantage and laced the next pitch into center scoring Sheehan and giving Calvary the lead.

The bottom of the 7th proved exciting as well when Wildcat first baseman Ryan Garcia ripped a hard single to center putting the tying run on board. He attempted to advance to second on a wild pitch and the catcher's throw glanced off the shortstop's glove into center field. Without hesitation, he ran for third but centerfielder Sheehan hustled in and threw a perfect laser to third where Gordon Nixon slapped the tag down erasing the threat. Harmening closed out the game by striking out El Camino's final hitter.

When the dust cleared, Calvary scored 4 runs in the last inning on 6 hits.

The other two Calvary runs came when Whitley walked to lead off the 4th inning, advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt by the catcher and scored when Harmening doubled down the left field line. Calvary scored again in the fifth when Sheehan blasted a hard line drive over the fence in right-center for his first home run of the year.

Harmening had 3 hits on the day including 2 RBI's. Hebert had two hits, Matt Hartman had a deep double to right center and Isaac Conover and Carpenter added singles.

Carpenter, a sophomore lefty, started the game on the mound and breezed through the first two innings before running into control problems in the third where he walked 3 and allowed 4 earned runs. Sheehan relieved him in the 4th and pitched 3 solid innings allowing no earned runs and striking out 6. Sheehan picked up the win evening his season record to 1-1. Harmening picked up the save by striking out 2 in the 7th.

Whitley also had a standout defensive game, throwing out the only 2 runners who attempted to steal and making a nice play on a bunt by popping out quickly and nailing the lead runner at second.

Calvary's season record now stands at 2-1 and they continue with the Pirate/Falcon Classic when they travel to San Diego High School on Thursday.

Calvary @ Santa Fe Christian 3/3/12

Go ahead RBI double to right-center field off SDSU bound Nolan Gannon.
The Calvary Lion's lost a tough battle to rival Santa Fe Christian 7-2 in a game that was much closer and more intense than the score indicates.

If this were a football, basketball or soccer game, the Calvary Lions would have walked away with a victory on Saturday, but it's baseball and there is no such thing as running down the clock and walking off the field. You have to rise to the challenge and face your opponent until the very last out is made. There is no easy way to victory and this game proved that point.

Calvary had the upper hand for the majority of the game taking a slim 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 6th inning when the Eagles broke the game open with a 6 run barrage in their final at bat that secured the win.

In his first start of the year, Isaac Conover kept the hard hitting Santa Fe team, which features 4 starters with D-1 scholarships, in check with a splendid outing allowing only 1 run on 3 hits in 4 innings of work. He walked 2 and struck out 6. His solid outing put Calvary in a great position to win the game.

With several pro scouts in attendance to watch senior Eagles starter Nolan Gannon, a 6'5" righthander who routinely throws between 87-93 MPH, Calvary managed to draw first blood in the second inning when newcomers Sam Sheehan and Matt Hartman slammed back-to-back doubles giving Calvary an early 1-0 lead.

Calvary added a second run the following inning when sophomore David Carpenter grounded a hard single up the middle and stole second base. Caleb Whitley fought off a tough 2-strike breaking ball and lined an RBI single to left giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Santa Fe scored their first run in the bottom half of the 3rd inning when they turned an infield single followed by a wild pitch into a run when Purdue-bound catcher Josh Estill grounded a hard single up the middle tightening the score to 2-1.

Neither team scored in the 4th inning although Calvary threatened when they stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd. Both teams relieved their starting pitchers in the fifth inning with Santa Fe bringing in hard throwing Bobby Zarubin, who will play on scholarship next year at Stanford, and Calvary bringing in another hard thrower, senior transfer Sam Sheehan. Both pitchers shut down their opponents in the 5th inning.

Then came the dreaded 6th inning. Zarubin kept Santa Fe within striking distance by retiring the side in order. In the Eagles half of the 6th Zarubin lead off with a booming opposite-field ground-rule double putting the tying run in scoring position. The next hitter grounded to short and Zarubin made a base running error by trying to advance to third and was thrown out easily, however the base umpire was apparently the only one in attendance who felt that wasn't the case and ruled him safe in a controversial call that proved to be the beginning of the end. Rather than having one out with the tying run on first, Calvary faced a situation with no outs and the tying run 90 feet away and the go-ahead run at first.

The next hitter was handcuffed on an inside fastball and fisted a popup that dropped perfectly between first and second, just out of the fielder's reach for an infield hit that scored Zarubin from third with the tying run.

With the score knotted at 2-2, senior ace Russell Harmening relieved Sheehan and struck out the first hitter he faced recording the first out of the inning. The 9th hitter laid down a perfect drag bunt for Santa Fe's 3rd infield hit of the day to load the bases. Harmening who normally has outstanding control, walking less than 1 batter per game over the past two seasons, uncharacteristically walked in the go-ahead run surrending the lead. The following hitter lined a shot to center scoring two to stretch Santa Fe's lead to 5-2. A run-scoring wild pitch and deep sacrifice fly sealed Calvary's fate as the Eagles soared to big victory.

Sam Sheehan was the hard-luck loser and had a much better outing than the box score indicates.

Three Calvary players played an outstanding defensive game led by senior Sam Hebert who played a flawless first base and capped off Calvary's sole double play with a great pick to record the out. Aaron Frazee played a very solid second base and exhibited his speed and range on more than one occasion. Junior Alex Nurding, normally a first baseman, had his second straight great defensive game in the outfield hauling in a deep drive at the base of the fence in right-center.

The game was the first in the 31st Annual Pirate/Falcon Classic. Calvary has a week of tough opponents ahead. They will be facing two of the largest schools in San Diego County starting with El Camino on Tuesday and San Diego High School on Thursday. They will face Fallbrook High School on Saturday. All games will be away.

Calvary @ Crawford High School 3/1/12

The Calvary Christian Lions started off their 2012 campaign by throwing a combined no-hitter and pounding out 14 runs in the year's first contest vs. Crawford High School.

David Carpenter, Brock Bentley and Matt Hartman limited the Colts to no hits while striking out 8 in a dominating overall performance.

Carpenter was the game's starter and he cruised through the first striking out 2 of the 3 batters he faced. He struggled with his control in the second inning and walked two and hit a batter before bearing down and striking out the final hitter on three pitches. Senior Bentley threw a perfect 3rd and 4th inning and sophomore Hartman closed it down by tossing a perfect 5th inning striking out two.

Offensively, the Lions banged out 12 hits lead by 3 each for Russell Harmening and Caleb Whitley. Newcomer Isaac Conover had a single and a double and 4 other Calvary hitters chipped in a hit apiece.

The Lions put 4 quick runs up in the first inning when Sophomore Carpenter hit a deep flyball to center that was misjudged by the center fielder and fell for a double. He alertly advanced to third when the fielder bobbled the ball. Whitley then hit a bullet up the middle on an 0-2 pitch scoring Carpenter on the line single. The scoring continued when Harmening drew a walk and scored when Conover doubled to the right field gap. Hartman walked and two costly infield errors eventually scored he and Conover giving the Lions the early lead.

They added 3 more in the 3rd inning when Harmening and Conover hit back-to-back singles and Hartman made it three in a row when he lined a single to left scoring Harmening. Two infield groundouts by Sam Hebert and Bentley brought in the next two runs.

Calvary broke the game open in the 4th with a seven run outburst that began when Carpenter walked and Whitley followed with a single. Sam Sheehan drew another walk loading the bases for Harmening who rifled a hard single to left scoring Carpenter and Whitley. Sheehan scored when Conover hit a short fly ball to right that was dropped by the rightfielder. Hebert and Alex Nurding followed with singles to take advantage of the miscue. When the dust cleared the Lions were up 14-0 and that's how it ended.

The stakes are much higher and the competition much stiffer as Calvary begins their first tournament of the year: the 31st Annual Falcon/Pirate Classic hosted by Oceanside and Torrey Pines. They begin the tournament on Saturday when they take on a very tough Santa Fe Christian team at 10:30 am at Santa Fe.
