Calvary vs. Mountain Empire @ Petco Park 4/27/12

Who Could Ask For Anything More?
With picture-perfect weather, an ideal setting, hundreds of their closest friends and family cheering them on, how could Calvary's baseball team ever lose? Never mind the score, everyone who came to Petco Park Friday evening to watch the Calvary Lions take on the Mountain Empire Redhawks walked away a winner.

It was much more than a typical baseball game. It is not often you see players walk on the field and instantly freeze in their tracks, with mouths opened in awe, as they take in the sight of an impeccably groomed major league baseball field. A field that they will be playing on in a matter of minutes.

Some players ran straight to the bench, touched the wood and sat where some of their favorite major leaguers sit nightly. Others dropped to their knees and started filling baggies and empty water bottles with dirt. Once the bat and helmet racks were discovered, there was a mad rush as to who could place their helmet first into their favorite Padre's storage bin. Coaches picked up the bullpen phones and jokingly barked out orders, cell phones were shooting pictures and taking video of every possible detail and some players simply sat down and took it all in.

Eventually, the players realized that they actually had to play a game and began to gingerly make their way onto the field. Team photos were taken and soon afterward the entire team gathered together to thank the Lord for the opportunity He had given them.

Soon afterward, the fans began trickling in and out came the cameras again. If you know anything about Calvary baseball it's that they are all business in their pre-game preparations and talking to anybody other than a teammate or coach is strictly off-limits. It is a time to focus on the task ahead. Not today. Today the game was secondary. The primary goal was to take it all in so the experience would be life-long memory, a memory to be shared with children and grandchildren. Players and coaches waved and talked to family and friends in the stands, with each taking pictures from both directions.

With game time quickly approaching, the players warmed-up and took fly balls in the putting green-like outfield grass. Egged on by the players, the coach belted a fungo over the centerfield wall - just for the fun of it. Who cares if they lost a $5.00 baseball?

A booming voice sounded out over the Petco Park PA system welcoming all to the park. Most in attendance thought it was the Padre's professional announcer, but Calvary had someone better in mind. Chris Nurding, father of junior leftfielder Alex Nurding, worked the game from the PA booth and did an absolutely outstanding job sounding like a Hall-of-Fame level broadcaster. Mike McNabb, Caleb Whitley's grandfather sat near him in the press box keeping the official score and handling the phones as both teams called him constantly with their replacements and changes.

Senior Gabriella Barbato, sang a tremendous rendition of the Star Spangled Banner as all the players were lined up following their announcements. Principal Jess Hetherington threw the ceremonial first pitch to Calvary catcher Caleb Whitley. It sailed in a bit high but that's ok because he's a soccer player. He probably could have kicked a strike though.

After all the hoopla died down, Jeremy Nurding, Alex's younger brother, yelled "Play Ball" and it was on. The Calvary Lions, wearing all white, sprinted on to the field led by Co-Captain's Sam Hebert and Russell Harmening.

Harmening, the two time Citrus-West pitcher of the year and easily the greatest pitcher in Calvary's history, got the start and instantly settled in, striking out the side in the first.

Calvary failed to score in the bottom half but when the second inning rolled around, Calvary started playing like "business as usual". Harmening held the Redhawks scoreless in the second, striking out two more. In their half of the inning, they took the lead by scoring two runs when senior centerfielder Sam Sheehan drew a walk and senior Isaac Conover followed with a soft single to right putting runners on first and second. With two outs, sophomore lefty Alex Nurding smoked a liner to right for a single that was misplayed by the rightfielder who allowed the ball to get by him. Sheehan scored on the hit and Conover came all the way around to score on the error giving the Lions a quick 2-0 edge.

Harmening once again struck out the side in the third inning, mixing in a deadly curveball with a 88-92 MPH fastball. In their half of the third, Calvary busted the game wide open and scored 4 runs. Sophomore leadoff hitter David Carpenter got the ball rolling when he reached on an infield single and advanced to second when the shortstop overthrew first base. Calvary's closest shot at a home run came when the next hitter, Caleb Whitley stepped up and launched a ball that ended up hooking foul near the Western Metal Building. He was later retired but sophomore Matt Hartman, the team's leading hitter, picked him up by lining a bullet to center scoring Carpenter. Harmening helped himself out by lining a hard single to left putting runners at first and second for Sheehan who stepped up and made it a tri-fecta, lining the third single in-a-row, this one scored Hartman and moved Harmening to third. Harmening scored when, with Sheehan stealing second, the catcher attempted to pick him off third but the the throw got away from the third baseman allowing Harmening to score on the error. Sheehan then stole third and scored when Nurding reached on an infield error. When the dust cleared, Calvary held a commanding 6-0 lead with their ace on the mound.

Harmening continued his mastery as he shutout the Redhawk offense allowing only two groundball singles and striking out 12 in only 5 innings of work. Only three batters put the ball in play, the remainder struck out.

In a normal game, the Lions would have left Harmening, who had thrown only 70 pitches and was clearly dominating every opposing hitter, in the game, along with the other starters. But with a 6-0 lead and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play on a Major League field, the Calvary coaches made every effort to get all 20 of their players into the game. With the majority of the starting 9 out of the lineup things got real interesting, real fast.

With senior righthander Brock Bentley on the mound to start the sixth inning, three consecutive infield errors to the first three batters of the inning allowed Mt. Empire to break into the scoring column making it 6-1. Nervousness set in with the young infielders and mental mistakes started piling onto the physical mistakes. With runners on first and third, Whitley easily gunned down a runner attempting to steal second, but the confused infielders failed to tag the runner. The Calvary defense had now given the Redhawks 4 extra outs and they were set on making the the Lions pay for the miscues. A groundout scored their second run and a groundball single through the 5.5 hole brought in their third. The Redhawks added insult to injury by getting their first hard hit of the day, a run-scoring double down the left field line. With the score now an uncomfortable 6-4 and a runner at third, Bentley stopped the madness by getting a big strikeout to end the inning. Although Bentley was charged with 4 runs, none earned, he pitched very well. If the Lion's had played errorless defense behind him, he would have retired the side on only 7 pitches.

Hanging on to the 6-4 lead, going into the last inning, Calvary's starters re-entered the game with Sheehan on the mound looking for a save. The hard throwing Sheehan got behind on the first hitter and the umpire's strike zone seemed to shrink as he walked the leadoff hitter, barely missing on two pitches that appeared to be strikes. The Redhawks, to Calvary's delight, gave up an out by bunting the runner to second. A groundball back to the pitcher made it two outs but the Redhawks best hitter, Daniel Hoyos, lined a sharp single to left scoring the runner and making it a 1-run game at 6-5.

As the tying run at first and with an 0-1 count on the following hitter, Hoyos attempted to advance into scoring position and took off for second on the next pitch. He got an excellent jump on the pitcher and it initially appeared that he had second base easily stolen. But junior catcher Whitley wouldn't have it. He anticipated the challenge and threw a rocket to second where Connor Kollenda slapped down the tag for the final out of the game. The throw to second, timed at a Major League level of 1.84 seconds was the 17th runner Whitley has thrown out this season, but none were nearly as important as the final out of this game.

The excited crowd and players celebrated the win and mingled around afterward completing one of the most memorable days in the history of Calvary athletics.

The win puts Calvary's record at 17-5. They have a busy schedule next week with a JV game on Monday and 3 more varsity games later in the week. They face Lincoln High School on Tuesday, followed by league games vs. Lutheran and Ocean View on Wednesday and Friday respectively.

Calvary @ Oceanside 4/26/12

               Pirates Bounce Past Lions
In a non-league contest, the Oceanside Pirates hit the ball in all the right places and strung together 5 runs to Calvary's 1 to end the Lion's winning streak at 9 consecutive games.

Oceanside starter Max Burdette shut down the normally potent Calvary offense by mixing a very effective changeup with a mid-80 MPH fastball scattering 5 hits and allowing no earned runs in 6 innings of work.

It was easily the Lion's worst offensive performance of the season hitting only 5 hard-hit balls on the day which is half of what they average in a typical game. Their only run came in the first inning when leadoff hitter David Carpenter reached on an infield error and worked his way around to score on a Matt Hartman sacrifice fly.

As bad as Calvary's offense was, Oceanside's wasn't any better, they were just much more effective. They only registered one hard-hit ball the entire game, but ended up with 9 hits on the day. 2 infield hits, 1 bouncer up the middle, 3 bouncing ball singles through the 5.5 hole and 2 bloopers barely over the 1st baseman's head was more than enough offense they needed for the victory.

Carpenter was the hard-luck loser and pitched much more effectively than the stats indicate. He walked none and struck out 7 in 4 2/3 innings of work. Senior Connor Kollenda finished it off by throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Russell Harmening had three singles and Sam Sheehan two to lead the Lion's offensive attack. Aaron Frazee also singled.

The loss puts Calvary at 16-5. They are next set to face Mt. Empire on Friday at Petco Park.

Calvary @ Foothills Christian 4/25/12

                Co "no-no" ver
Senior pitcher Isaac Conover shut down the Foothill Knights throwing a complete game no-hitter leading the Lions to a 7-0 victory over their toughest Citrus League opponent.

Mixing a mid-80's fastball with a devastating 12-6 curveball, Conover struckout 10 and walked 3 in a dominating overall performance. The win evens his record at 2-2 and lowers his ERA to 1.35.

The Calvary pitching staff is in the midst of a 21 consecutive inning scoreless streak and has allowed only 2 runs over the last 40 innings pitched.

As with most no-hitters , there were some defensive gems, struggles and a bit of controversy. Conover struggled with his control in the second inning when he walked two hitters in a row and was clearly having trouble locating his fastball. He eventually adjusted his release point by throwing more breaking balls to the following hitters and as a result was able bring his fastball back into the strike zone and it was smooth sailing from that point on.

Rightfielder David Carpenter preserved the no-hitter when he turned what initially looked like a hard line drive single into an out when he charged the ball hard and rifled a throw to first getting the hitter by at least 3 steps.

The minor controversy occurred with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning when a two-bouncer was hit to the Calvary thirdbaseman about two feet to his right. Instead of taking one step and getting in front the ball, he took two steps backward and made an awkward backhand stab at the ball, missing it entirely. In some games, it may have been considered a hit because of the fielder's approach, however to break up a no-hitter, the general rule of thumb is that it must be a clean, clear hit. By no means did it meet that criteria. If played properly, there would have been no question. Thus the no-hitter remained intact.

Calvary's offensive attack was lead by senior Sam Sheehan who singled, doubled and tripled, knocking in 3 runs. Matt Hartman and David carpenter each singled and doubled.

With no score coming into the third inning, Calvary put 3 on the board, when leadoff hitter David Carpenter, protecting with two strikes, stuck out his bat and dinked an excuse-me liner over the first baseman's head. The ball bounced to the right and Carpenter turned it into a double. Matt Hartman reached on a fielding error by the Knight 3rd baseman and Russell Harmening was hit by a pitch to load the bases setting the stage for Sheehan who lofted a deep fly ball into the right field corner that bounced out of play for a ground-rule double. Carpenter and Hartman scored on the hit. Two pitches later, Harmening scored on a wild pitch giving Calvary the lead.

They added another in the fourth when Alex Nurding lined a double over the centerfielder's head, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield single by Carpenter.

Two more scored in the 5th when Hartman lined a frozen rope at the centerfielder who misjudged the ball, running in and letting the ball get over his head, giving Hartman a leadoff double. Hartman advanced to 3rd when Harmening flied out to right. Sheehan then singled to right scoring Hartman but the ball went through the outfielder's legs and Sheehan advanced to third on the error. He scored on a Conover RBI groundout.

They scored their 7th and final run in the top of the 7th when Sheehan once again hit a deep fly ball to the rightfield corner winding up at 3rd for a one-out triple. He scored when senior Sam Hebert hit a soft liner to right-center for a run-scoring single.

The win is Calvary's 9th in a row and puts their overall record at 16-4. They are now 3-0 in Citrus League play and have taken sole possession of first place. They take on Oceanside High School in a non-league contest on Thursday and travel to Petco Park on Friday where they will play Mountain Empire at 4:05 pm.

Calvary @ Guajome 4/20/12

Inside the park...single
                          Lions Croak the Frogs
It took two innings to get on track, but the Calvary Lions turned 7 errors and 11 hits into 9 runs as they rumbled past the Guajome Park Academy Frogs 9-0 in a Citrus League contest.

The win puts Calvary at 2-0 in league play and 15-4 overall.

Once again, Calvary's pitching was dominate as senior ace Russell Harmening mowed through the Guajome hitters allowing only one soft bouncing single to the first batter of the game. The batter was immediately picked off first base by catcher Caleb Whitley and Harmening took it from there and was perfect for the remainder of his outing. In 5 innings of work, he walked none and struck out 10.

Harmening, who will pitch at Westmont College on scholarship next season, picked up his 6th victory of the year which is tied for tops in San Diego County. His ERA is 1.10 and in 38.1 innings pitched he has allowed only 14 hits while striking out 63. He has walked only 3 batters the entire season.

The remainder of Calvary's pitching staff has nearly been equally impressive. They have now thrown 14 consecutive shutout innings and have allowed only 2 runs in the last 33 innings pitched. The team ERA is down to a microscopic 1.36 for the season. They have limited opposing hitters to a .170 batting average while averaging nearly 9 strikeouts per game.

After two scoreless innings, the visiting Lions finally got on the board when with 2 outs, David Carpenter and Whitley reached on consecutive singles. Sophomore Matt Hartman lined a hard single to center. The fielder let the ball go through his legs and it rolled all the way to the fence 400' feet from home. Both runners scored and Hartman raced all around the bases, scoring on the error and giving Calvary a 3-0 lead.

They added 3 more the following inning when Isaac Conover smashed a liner just inside the left field foul line for a leadoff double. Sam Hebert knocked him with an RBI single to left that was kicked around by the left fielder allowing Hebert to advance into scoring position on the error. Senior Brock Bentley made them pay for the miscue when he launched a deep line drive well over the right-fielder's head for a stand-up triple. He later scored on a Carpenter RBI groundout making it 6-0.

Two more scored in the 5th inning when Hartman singled and stole second. He scored when Harmening hit a deep drive to left that was dropped by the outfielder. Harmening advanced to third and scored on a deep sacrifice fly by senior Sam Sheehan.

The Lions scored their 9th and final run when Carpenter and Whitley once again hit back-to-back singles. Carpenter scored when Harmening lined a double to left.

Sheehan relieved Harmening and threw a scoreless 6th inning, striking out 2.

The game ended after the 6th when the Guajome manager elected to concede the game and not have hi players take the field for the final inning of play.

Calvary has a busy and historic week coming up that kicks off with a JV game on Monday at Lincoln High School in San Diego. On Wednesday they play their toughest league opponent, Foothills Christian at the Santee Sportsplex. Thursday they once again take on a large school as they face the Pirates of Oceanside High School and on Friday they are playing at Petco Park against Mountain Empire.

Calvary vs. Ocean View 4/19/12

                                               Calvary Blocks Ocean View

In their first Citrus League West contest, the Calvary Christian Lions began the defense of their league championship title by defeating the Ocean View Christian Patriots 12-0.

The win is the 15th straight league victory for Calvary stretching back to the 2010 season.

The Lions were able to play all 20 of their players and all contributed to the win. They pounded out 17 hits and played a solid defensive game overall. Once again the Lion pitching staff threw exceptionally well as 4 pitchers combined for the shutout allowing only 2 hits, 2 walks while striking out 13. The staff lowered their team ERA to an amazing 1.42.

Senior Isaac Conover got the start and threw 3 solid innings. After a shaky first inning where Ocean View managed their only 2 hits, he settled in and finished strong by striking out the last 3 batters he faced. Connor Kollenda, in his first pitching outing of the year, threw 2 hitless innings of relief, striking out 4 and picking up his first career victory. Brock Bentley had another strong performance throwing a perfect 6th inning with one strikeout and sophomore lefthander David Carpenter finished it off by striking out the side in the last inning.

Offensively, 13 different Lion hitters had base hits. They were led by Carpenter, Matt Hartman, Alex Nurding and Caleb Whitley who had two hits each. Hartman and Whitley, along with Sam Hebert had RBI doubles.

The win puts Calvary at 1-0 in league play and 14-4 overall. They take on Guajome in their second league contest on Friday 4/20 at the Vista Sports Park at 3:00.

Calvary @ Horizon 4/12/12

          Lion's Maul the Panthers
Following their Lion's Tournament championship, the Calvary Christian Lions maintained their momentum and soundly defeated the Horizon Panthers 17-1.

In their strongest offensive performance of the year, Calvary pounded out 20 hits led by senior Isaac Conover who was 3 for 4 with a double, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI's.

The Lion pitching staff also continued their dominance as four Calvary hurlers combined to limit the Panthers to only one hit, a 5th inning groundball through the 5.5 hole. They allowed no earned runs lowering their team ERA to 1.50 on the season.

Though not their best pitching performance of the season as evidenced by 7 walks and a hit by pitch, their stuff was good enough to limit the hits and continually pitch their way out of the trouble they created.

Sophomore David Carpenter started the game throwing 2 shutout innings. He was followed by Sam Sheehan who also tossed 2 shutout innings. Conover threw 2 allowing the only hit and one unearned run, and senior Brock Bentley threw a perfect 7th inning.

But the true highlight of the game was the Lion's offensive attack. Caleb Whitley and Matt Hartman each had 3 hits of their own and Russell Harmening, Sheehan, Carpenter and Gordon Nixon each chipped in two apiece. Freshman Kallin Iwasaki and seniors Brock Bentley and Sam Hebert also added hits to the attack.

Harmening led with 3 RBI's and Whitley and Carpenter, along with Conover had 2 each.

The win was Calvary's 6th straight and improves their record to 13-4 overall. Citrus League play begins next week as Calvary tries to defend their 2011 title. Last year they finished a perfect 9-0 in league play.

Calvary @ Francis Parker 4/5/12 (Lion's Tournament Championship)

                       Lions Win Lion's!!
The Calvary Christian Lions made it a clean sweep as they won their first
ever Lion's Tournament by beating Parker 6-1 in the championship game on
Thursday afternoon at Alliant University.

Calvary went a perfect 5-0 in the tournament outscoring their opponents
25-6. They played solid baseball overall but phenomenal pitching put them
over the top. 6 different pitchers combined for an amazing 0.58 ERA
averaging less than 5 hits, 3 walks and nearly 9 strikeouts per game.

The pitching staff was lead by Russell Harmening who walked away with the
MVP trophy following the championship game. Over 8 innings of work, he
allowed no earned runs and struck out 13 opposing hitters.

The championship game against a tough Francis Parker squad was tight through
4 innings, knotted in a 1-1 tie. Calvary broke it open by scoring 5 runs in
the final 3 frames to walk away with the championship trophy.

Parker struck first when senior starting pitcher Brock Bentley gave up a
leadoff single and was unable to coerce a low strike from the umpire and
ended up walking 2 of the next 3 hitters to load the bases. Without wasting
any time, Harmening came in to relieve with one out and the bases loaded. On
an 0-1 count on the first hitter he faced, he got the next pitch too close
and struck the next hitter in the arm to force in Parker's only run on the
hit by pitch.

Parker held their narrow one run lead until the 4th inning when the Lions
scratched one out to tie it. Sophomore Matt Hartman started the inning by
blasting a double to deep left field putting himself in scoring position.
Harmening followed with a line shot single to right that was hit too hard to
score Hartman leaving runners at 1st and 3rd. Sam Sheehan stepped up and hit
a hard ground ball to short and Parker was able to turn a double play, but
Hartman was able to score form third tying the game at one.

Calvary took the lead the next inning when Alex Nurding singled and freshman
Kallin Iwasaki reached on an error by the shortstop. Leadoff hitter Davey
Carpenter then collected the second of his 3 singles on the day to load the
bases with one out. Caleb Whitley then hit a hard groundball to short that
had the makings of a potential double play but the speedy Carpenter was able
to make contact with the shortstop who was taking the bag himself and threw
the ball slightly off line and Whitley beat the throw to first on a
bang-bang play. Nurding scored from third on the RBI groundout giving
Calvary the lead they would never relinquish.

Harmening was in cruise control and kept the normally hard-hitting Parker
offense at bay and continued getting stronger as the game progressed. He
shut them out for 6 2/3 innings striking out 10.

Calvary gave him some breathing room by adding 2 more in the 6th inning when
Harmening lined a double in the right-center gap and Hartman followed with a
walk. Another potential double play ball was misplayed by the thirdbaseman
who threw the ball into rightfield and Harmening scored on the error.
Hartman scored when Isaac Conover knocked him in with an RBI groundout.

The added their last two runs in the 7th when Carpenter singled and stole
second and scored when Whitley lined a single to right. Whitley stole second
and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch for Calvary's 6th and
final run.

The win now puts Calvary's overall record at 12-4 and ends a month where
Calvary played the toughest schedule in the school's history. The schedule
has included 7 CIF Division 1 schools and the average enrollment size of
their competition was nearly 2000 in comparison to Calvary's 132. So far,
this season has been a David and Goliath type of success.

It continues next week when they face another Division 5 rival, Horizon.
They begin league play the following week.

Also......please do not miss this! Calvary is playing at Petco Park on
Friday 4/27 at 4:05 vs. Mountain Empire. If you are interested in attending,

Calvary @ El Cajon Christian High School 4/5/12 (Lion's Tournament)

Me pitching against El Cajon Christian
         Calvary Advances to Lion's Finals
The Calvary Lion's continued their mission to win the 62nd Annual Lion's Tournament by squeaking out a narrow 3-2 victory over the Christian Patriots in the semi-final game at Alliant University.

The game started shaky when Calvary faltered early by allowing Christian to score 2 runs in the first inning.

Starter Davey Carpenter working on short rest after shutting out the Rock two days earlier, struggled with his control early on. He walked 3 and gave up 1 hit with both runs eventually scoring on wild pitches.

Sophomore righthander Matt Hartman relieved Carpenter and was nearly perfect in relief. He completed the game by shutting out the Patriots only allowing 2 hits and walking none. He struck out 5. At one point, Hartman retired 15 hitters in a row in a fantastic outing. Through 11 1/3 innings of work this season he has yet to allow a run.

Calvary bounced back the next inning and took the lead on a controversial play that proved to be be a game-decider. Down 2-0 with two outs, Sam Hebert lined a single to start the rally. Junior Alex Nurding followed with another line single to right putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Senior Isaac Conover then stepped up and launched a deep fly to left center. The centerfielder made a spectacular effort and initially appeared to catch the ball, but after taking a step it popped high out of his glove and appeared to hit the outfield wall and he then re-caught the ball. As the Calvary runners were running around the bases the fielder held up the ball and began jogging in thinking that he had made the third out. With two outs and the score tied after Hebert and Nurding scored, Conover was sent home but the catcher was unable to hold on to the ball and Conover was safe in what eventually proved to be the winning run.

The game was shut down for 10 minutes as the Christian coaches and players debated with the umpires claiming the ball never hit the wall, but they did not prevail and the umpires ruled that it hit the wall and the play would stand as called.

Even though Conover was not even at second base when the centerfielder began running back to his dugout, he went around the bases to score without the benefit of an error and was credited with an in-the-park home run and all three of Calvary's RBI's.

There was no additional scoring as Hartman continued to shut down the Patriot offense and protect the one-run lead.

Calvary's is now a perfect 4-0 in the Lion's Tournament and advances to the finals vs.. Francis Parker.  They are now 11-4 on the season.

(FYI: this is the first time in Calvary baseball history that a team reached the championship game of the Lion's tournament)

Calvary vs Valley Center 4/4/12 (Lion's Tournament)

                                                                    Lions Total Jaguars
The Calvary Lions staged a dramatic extra-inning come-from-behind, walk-off win to defeat the Valley Center Jaguars 3-2 to clinch a playoff spot in the 62nd Annual Lion's Tournament.

Calvary won their division by going a perfect 3-0 in the tournament and are advancing to the semi-finals and will face Christian High School in an early 9:00 am game on Thursday at Alliant University.

The game was tied at 1-1 through 7 innings and things looked bleak when Valley Center scored one and took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. But the Lions showed tremendous character by scoring two in the bottom of the inning and walked-off with the win when Sam Hebert ended the game with an RBI single to end it.

Once again, Calvary's pitching was top-notch. Senior Sam Sheehan got the nod and threw 6 2/3 innings allowing no earned runs while scattering 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 7. Sheehan did not have his best stuff, but that did not matter because he rose to the occasion and got the outs when he had to. He pitched well enough to win, but Calvary's defense, which has been superb throughout the tournament, faltered and allowed both of Valley Center's runs to score without the benefit of a hit.

Russell Harmening closed the game down by tossing 1 2/3 innings and striking out 3. He picked up the win in relief putting him at 4-1 on the season.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the 4th inning, Calvary managed to tie the game when sophomore Matt Hartman singled. He displayed excellent baserunning ability when he advanced to second and third on wild pitches. Neither pitch bounced far away from the catcher, but his anticipation and training allowed him to single-handedly put himself in scoring position, creating an opportunity for Russell Harmening to drive him in with a single to knot the game at 1 apiece.

Both pitchers continued to shut down their opponents and the game remained deadlocked through regulation. The Jaguars jumped into the lead, once again taking advantage of a Calvary error.

With the score 2-1 heading into the bottom the eighth, leadoff hitter Davey Carpenter got the ball rolling by dropping a Texas-league single that fell between the shortstop and centerfielder. With one out and Carpenter running on the pitch, Hartman lined a solid single to right-center putting the tying run on third and the winning run aboard. Harmening came through once again by lining a double in the right-center gap scoring Carpenter to tie the game. With the winning run only 90 feet away, Hebert ended the game when he fought off an inside pitch and dropped the ball in front of the centerfielder for the game winner. It was Calvary's first walk off win of the year and Hebert was mobbed by his teammates.

The win puts Calvary into double digits. They are now 10-4 on the year.

Calvary vs Del Sol (Las Vegas, Nevada) 4/3/12 (Lion's Tournament)

Maybe What Happens in Vegas Should Have Stayed in Vegas
After averaging only 2 runs per game over their last 8 games, Calvary Christian's normally potent offense finally busted out and scored 10 runs against Del Sol of Las Vegas in the second game of the 62nd Annual Lions Tournament winning 10-1 in a contest held at Kearny High School in San Diego.

Calvary pounded out 14 hits and gave senior starting pitcher Isaac Conover plenty of cushion as he cruised to his first victory of the year. Conover was brilliant on the day, tossing 5 shutout innings, scattering 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 8.

Calvary started fast and furious putting up 5 runs in the first inning. Things started badly for Del Sol when Calvary leadoff hitter David Carpenter hit a short popup near the pitcher's mound that was called by two players but dropped between them for a gift single. Sam Sheehan drew a walk and Matt Hartman hit a ground-rule double to straight-away right to drive in Carpenter with the games first run. It was Hartman's 2nd RBI ground-rule double in two days. Russell Harmening extended Calvary's lead to 3-0 when he drove in two with a single. The scoring continued when Alex Nurding drew a two-out walk putting runners on 1st and 2nd and Conover helped out his own cause by lining a bases-clearing double over the centerfielder's head giving the Lions a 5-0 lead.

They put the game out of reach by tacking on 3 more in the 2nd inning. Once again, Carpenter got it rolling by singling to center. With Carpenter running on the pitch, Sheehan followed with a single of his own. The centerfielder bobbled the ball and Carpenter ended up scoring on the error. With two outs Caleb Whitley continued the scoring with a double off the base of the left field fence scoring Sheehan. Sam Hebert capped off the inning with a single to left scoring Whitley and giving the Lions a commanding 8 run lead.

Meanwhile, Conover was cruising through the Del Sol lineup and received flawless defensive support from his teammates. Once again, he helped himself out by self-generating Calvary's 9th run. He lead off the 3rd inning with a hard groundball single through the 5.5 hole. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. He alertly advanced to third on a second wild pitch but the catcher threw to third but air-mailed the throw allowing Conover to trot in on the throwing error.

Calvary added their final run in their last at bat by combining 4 singles into a run. Pinch hitter Sam Athas drove in the run by lining a solid single to center scoring Sheehan.

Senior Brock Bentley came in relief and finished the game. He allowed one unearned run, gave up only 1 hit, walked none and struck out 2. Del Sol's only run came when their runner scored on an errant pick-off attempt.

Sheehan and Carpenter had three singles each and Harmening and Conover had two hits to lead the Calvary charge.

Calvary is now 9-4 on the year and 2-0 in the Lion's Tournament. With a solid third game vs.. Valley Center, Calvary has a great opportunity to clinch a spot in the playoffs. Currently in their pool, Calvary is 2-0, The Rock and Valley Center are 1-1 and Del Sol is 0-2.

They take on Valley Center at 3:00 on Wednesday at Alliant University in San Diego.

Calvary vs The Rock Academy 4/2/12 (62nd Lion's Tournament)

                  Calvary Crumbles the Rock
A pair of sophomores lead Calvary Christian to a 3-0 victory over the Rock Academy in the opening game of the 62nd Annual Lion's Tournament.

Lefthanded starting pitcher David Carpenter tossed a two-hit, complete game shutout and Matt Hartman was the offensive hero of the game, putting on a one-man show by having a role in all 3 of Calvary's runs.

Carpenter pitched to only 1 batter over the minimum, walking 4 and striking out 7. He picked up his first win of the year and lowered his ERA to a miniscule 1.70. He received plenty of support because the Lions played their best defensive game of the year.

Junior catcher Caleb Whitley virtually shut down the Rock's potent running game by gunning down every runner who attempted to steal. He threw out 3 at second base and also picked a runner off first. The middle infield of shortstop Russell Harmening and secondbaseman Aaron Frazee turned two double plays to keep the game in order. The second double play was a nothing short of spectacular when Frazee ranged far to his left on a ball that most secondbasemen would have gotten the simple out at first, but he aggressively went after the ball and made a quick, strong throw to Harmening who finished off the twin killing.

The Lion's struck quickly putting up two runs in the first inning. Carpenter lead it off by popping a ball to shallow right that dropped in for a single. The rightfielder let the ball get away from him and Carpenter alertly took advantage of the mistake and scampered to second on the error. With two outs, Harmening walked to set the stage for Hartman who delivered a run-scoring ground-rule double that bounced high off the astroturf and over the right field fence to score Carpenter. Senior firstbaseman Sam Hebert knocked in another when he fought off a two-strike pitch and hit a soft line single to left scoring Harmening and making it 2-0.

Hartman gave Calvary a bit of breathing room in the 4th inning when he lofted a deep opposite-field fly ball down the right-field line that stayed fair and carried over the fence for a home run to extend Calvary's lead to 3-0. The solo shot was his first of the year.

That was all Carpenter and Calvary's defense needed as they shut down a very solid Rock offense.

The win puts Calvary's overall record at 8-4 and 1-0 in the Lion's Tournament. They take on an out-of-state team tomorrow, Del Sol from Las Vegas, Nevada. The game will be held at Kearny High School with the first pitch at 3:00.
