Calvary @ Guajome 4/20/12

Inside the park...single
                          Lions Croak the Frogs
It took two innings to get on track, but the Calvary Lions turned 7 errors and 11 hits into 9 runs as they rumbled past the Guajome Park Academy Frogs 9-0 in a Citrus League contest.

The win puts Calvary at 2-0 in league play and 15-4 overall.

Once again, Calvary's pitching was dominate as senior ace Russell Harmening mowed through the Guajome hitters allowing only one soft bouncing single to the first batter of the game. The batter was immediately picked off first base by catcher Caleb Whitley and Harmening took it from there and was perfect for the remainder of his outing. In 5 innings of work, he walked none and struck out 10.

Harmening, who will pitch at Westmont College on scholarship next season, picked up his 6th victory of the year which is tied for tops in San Diego County. His ERA is 1.10 and in 38.1 innings pitched he has allowed only 14 hits while striking out 63. He has walked only 3 batters the entire season.

The remainder of Calvary's pitching staff has nearly been equally impressive. They have now thrown 14 consecutive shutout innings and have allowed only 2 runs in the last 33 innings pitched. The team ERA is down to a microscopic 1.36 for the season. They have limited opposing hitters to a .170 batting average while averaging nearly 9 strikeouts per game.

After two scoreless innings, the visiting Lions finally got on the board when with 2 outs, David Carpenter and Whitley reached on consecutive singles. Sophomore Matt Hartman lined a hard single to center. The fielder let the ball go through his legs and it rolled all the way to the fence 400' feet from home. Both runners scored and Hartman raced all around the bases, scoring on the error and giving Calvary a 3-0 lead.

They added 3 more the following inning when Isaac Conover smashed a liner just inside the left field foul line for a leadoff double. Sam Hebert knocked him with an RBI single to left that was kicked around by the left fielder allowing Hebert to advance into scoring position on the error. Senior Brock Bentley made them pay for the miscue when he launched a deep line drive well over the right-fielder's head for a stand-up triple. He later scored on a Carpenter RBI groundout making it 6-0.

Two more scored in the 5th inning when Hartman singled and stole second. He scored when Harmening hit a deep drive to left that was dropped by the outfielder. Harmening advanced to third and scored on a deep sacrifice fly by senior Sam Sheehan.

The Lions scored their 9th and final run when Carpenter and Whitley once again hit back-to-back singles. Carpenter scored when Harmening lined a double to left.

Sheehan relieved Harmening and threw a scoreless 6th inning, striking out 2.

The game ended after the 6th when the Guajome manager elected to concede the game and not have hi players take the field for the final inning of play.

Calvary has a busy and historic week coming up that kicks off with a JV game on Monday at Lincoln High School in San Diego.
