Calvary vs Del Sol (Las Vegas, Nevada) 4/3/12 (Lion's Tournament)

Maybe What Happens in Vegas Should Have Stayed in Vegas
After averaging only 2 runs per game over their last 8 games, Calvary Christian's normally potent offense finally busted out and scored 10 runs against Del Sol of Las Vegas in the second game of the 62nd Annual Lions Tournament winning 10-1 in a contest held at Kearny High School in San Diego.

Calvary pounded out 14 hits and gave senior starting pitcher Isaac Conover plenty of cushion as he cruised to his first victory of the year. Conover was brilliant on the day, tossing 5 shutout innings, scattering 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 8.

Calvary started fast and furious putting up 5 runs in the first inning. Things started badly for Del Sol when Calvary leadoff hitter David Carpenter hit a short popup near the pitcher's mound that was called by two players but dropped between them for a gift single. Sam Sheehan drew a walk and Matt Hartman hit a ground-rule double to straight-away right to drive in Carpenter with the games first run. It was Hartman's 2nd RBI ground-rule double in two days. Russell Harmening extended Calvary's lead to 3-0 when he drove in two with a single. The scoring continued when Alex Nurding drew a two-out walk putting runners on 1st and 2nd and Conover helped out his own cause by lining a bases-clearing double over the centerfielder's head giving the Lions a 5-0 lead.

They put the game out of reach by tacking on 3 more in the 2nd inning. Once again, Carpenter got it rolling by singling to center. With Carpenter running on the pitch, Sheehan followed with a single of his own. The centerfielder bobbled the ball and Carpenter ended up scoring on the error. With two outs Caleb Whitley continued the scoring with a double off the base of the left field fence scoring Sheehan. Sam Hebert capped off the inning with a single to left scoring Whitley and giving the Lions a commanding 8 run lead.

Meanwhile, Conover was cruising through the Del Sol lineup and received flawless defensive support from his teammates. Once again, he helped himself out by self-generating Calvary's 9th run. He lead off the 3rd inning with a hard groundball single through the 5.5 hole. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. He alertly advanced to third on a second wild pitch but the catcher threw to third but air-mailed the throw allowing Conover to trot in on the throwing error.

Calvary added their final run in their last at bat by combining 4 singles into a run. Pinch hitter Sam Athas drove in the run by lining a solid single to center scoring Sheehan.

Senior Brock Bentley came in relief and finished the game. He allowed one unearned run, gave up only 1 hit, walked none and struck out 2. Del Sol's only run came when their runner scored on an errant pick-off attempt.

Sheehan and Carpenter had three singles each and Harmening and Conover had two hits to lead the Calvary charge.

Calvary is now 9-4 on the year and 2-0 in the Lion's Tournament. With a solid third game vs.. Valley Center, Calvary has a great opportunity to clinch a spot in the playoffs. Currently in their pool, Calvary is 2-0, The Rock and Valley Center are 1-1 and Del Sol is 0-2.

They take on Valley Center at 3:00 on Wednesday at Alliant University in San Diego.
